Where Motherhood Meets Muscle with Birth to Barbells by BoostBC

What began as a shared frustration between two health professionals has grown into one of Kelowna’s most uplifting fitness communities for moms. Birth To Barbells wasn’t born from a business plan it came from lived experience.

Co-founders Brigitte and Alanna, both working in the health and wellness field, found themselves unexpectedly humbled during their own pregnancies and postpartum journeys. Despite backgrounds as a chiropractor and RMT/fitness trainer, they felt something was missing. “Even as two moms who have knowledge in how our body works… we still felt like there was a big gap in the information accessible to women in our position,” they explain. More than anything, they struggled to find a space where they could strength train safely without the overwhelming “noise from society on what to do and what not to do.”

So, they created one.

Birth To Barbells began in 2022 as a six-week in-person series at a local Kelowna gym. The concept was simple but powerful: offer postpartum women a safe place to move their bodies while also teaching them what’s actually happening physically during recovery. That first program laid the foundation for something much bigger. Today, the program has supported more than 150 women and their babies, evolving into a full-fledged business offering weekly Prenatal/Postpartum fitness classes, community walks, education series, parenting workshops, along with collaborations with other health practitioners. At its core, Birth To Barbells is about rewriting the narrative around motherhood and strength.

When a woman walks into her first class, the goal isn’t just a workout, it’s a mindset shift. “Our # 1 goal is to help that woman learn to trust her body and truly believe she is capable and strong and not fragile,” Brigette and Alanna state. For many participants, this is a radical change. Brigette and Alanna believe the biggest way to help mother through Birth To Barbells is "to give them the education, guidance, and coaching to allow them to feel confident in their own bodies and their own power" Especially with such a empowering journey of postpartum and pregnancy. After years of being told to stay small, cautious, or “bounce back,” they’re instead encouraged at Birth To Barbells to take up space,

build strength, and feel powerful doing it.

And yes, that “bounce back” idea? They’re quick to shut it down.

“If we could tattoo ‘The 6 week bounce back is fake news’ on our foreheads we would in a second,” they joke. In reality, Brigette and Alanna emphasize, six weeks postpartum isn’t a finish line rather a starting point. Their approach prioritizes healing, education, and long-term strength over unrealistic expectations. “We may not look like our pre-pregnancy body again but let’s make our postpartum body a different but equally strong and beautiful version of ourselves.”

That philosophy comes to life in the gym every day. Many women arrive having never touched a barbell before. What they discover often surprises them. From learning to squat with an empty bar to eventually lifting heavy plates, the progression is both physical and emotional. Some even find themselves out-lifting their partners, a milestone the coaches celebrate wholeheartedly. “Nothing brings us more joy than seeing a mom out-lift!”

But beyond the weights and workouts, it’s the community that truly defines Birth to Barbells.

“Empowerment. Friendship. Safety.” Those are the three words they use to describe it and each one is deeply intentional. Women leave not only stronger, but more confident and informed. They build friendships that extend beyond the gym. And perhaps most importantly, they find a space where they can show up exactly as they are, whether that means lifting, laughing, crying, or simply getting through the day with their baby by their side.

Because here, strength isn’t just physical. It’s shared.
