Prepare for Wildfire Season: FireSmart Chipping Program is Back | BoostBC

As fire season quickly approaches, it's important to make sure we all take the right steps to protect ourselves and our community. We have witnessed and lived the devastation wildfires can leave in their wake. In an attempt to combat this, the City of Kelowna is bringing back the FireSmart Chipping Program to dispose of the flammable debris from your yard.
Starting in 2022, the FireSmart Chipping Program has managed to remove nearly 270 metric tons of dangerous, flammable materials from within the community. Clearing these debis is the first line of defence against wildfires, and the City of Kelowna is here to help with that.

The city will be collecting plants and shrubs such as Cedar, Juniper, Mugo Pine, and Conifers (spruce, fir, pine). Residents who have these materials are encouraged to register for a curb side pick up here, while spots are still available. They will not be picking up regular yard waste, such as leafy trees or shrubs, grasses, flowers, bulk pine needles, or anything with roots, dirt or gravel.

Once registration closes, those accepted will receive a date for their pick up, as well as instructions on how to prep the debis. The collection will take place throughout the month of May. Spots fill up fast, so be sure to secure your sooner rather than later.
Being fire smart does not stop there, and there are many preventative and proactive measures you and your family can take.
Have a Fire Plan. Make sure you have a plan that you and your family know well, and have practiced a few times.
Learn to Use a Fire Extinguisher. Being able to tackle a small burn before it grows out of control is something we all can learn to do.
Know the Rules for Outdoor Burning. Take the time to educate yourself on the rules of burning in your area, and never burn during a fire ban.

Being proactive and prepared is the best way you can help protect the community we all love. Sign up for the FireSmart Chipping Program today and help the City of Kelowna take action against wildfires this season.
