Not All Money is Good Money, How to Protect Your Business | BoostBC

Fake cash is circulating far more than you are probably even aware of. Would you be able to spot a counterfeit bill in your register? Fake bank notes are becoming more sophisticated and harder to spot. At fist glance, these bills can look like the real deal, but with a quick look in the right place, you can confirm it legitimacy.

In order to protect you and your business, it is very important that you can spot the difference between the fakes and the real bank notes. There are four easy steps you can take to make sure you are not being duped by these cash scammers:

  1. Feel

  2. Look

  3. Tilt

  4. Flip

Feel the note, it is all one piece of polymer with some transparent areas. You should be able to feel where the ink stands up from the page on the portrait, the large number and the words "Bank of Canada". The transparent window should also feel slightly raised.

Look at the note, the metallic portrait in the window should match the large portrait. The numbers in and around the transparent window match the value of the bill. For a vertical $10 bill, make sure the images in and around the metallic window are sharp and well defined.

Tilt the note toward you, the metallic image and other holographic feature should change color on both front and back as the note tilts.

Flip the note and ensure the portrait in the metallic strip matches the portrait on the front of the bill. For the vertical $10 notes, make sure the metallic feature on each side matches.

These steps are quick, and can prevent you and your business from falling pray to the counterfeit crooks. Taking the time now can save you from an expensive mistake that could hurt your livelihood and your reputation. Spot it. Stop it. Protect your business.
