New Public Art Project Aims to Transform Rutland Transit Exchange by BoostBC
Artists across the Okanagan now have an exciting opportunity to make a lasting mark on one of Kelowna’s busiest community spaces. The City of Kelowna has officially opened applications for a new public art project at the recently upgraded Rutland Transit Exchange.
The project will feature a six-panel mural installation designed to celebrate Rutland’s unique identity, from its deep agricultural roots to its growth into one of Kelowna’s most vibrant and diverse urban neighbourhoods. The selected artwork will also reflect themes of community gathering, local culture, and everyday life in Rutland.
According to Christine McWillis, Cultural Services Manager for the City of Kelowna, the initiative is part of the city’s broader commitment to supporting arts and culture in public spaces. “The City of Kelowna is committed to fostering a rich and vibrant creative sector,” McWillis said. “We want our city to be a place where creativity pops up everywhere you go and is accessible, inspiring, and truly part of everyday life for residents and visitors.”

The mural project comes after recent improvements to the transit exchange located at Shephard and Asher Road. City officials say the goal is to turn the high-traffic public space into a more welcoming and visually engaging community hub.
Sara Thirnbeck, Community Development Coordinator, emphasized the impact public art can have on neighbourhood identity. “Art projects like this really bring a space to life and make it feel warm, welcoming, and connected to the people who live here,” she said. “Rutland already has so many amazing murals, this one is going to further add to that landscape and celebrate the neighbourhood’s unique history and character.”

Transit Infrastructure Coordinator Katie Sherwood added that transit exchanges are ideal locations for public art because they are spaces residents interact with every day. “Projects like this help make that experience more welcoming and reflective of the community,” Sherwood said. “We’re excited to see local artists help shape a space that many residents rely on daily.”
The opportunity is open to both professional and emerging artists from across the Okanagan. Applications will be accepted until June 8, with work scheduled to take place between July and August. The selected artist will receive $5,500 plus applicable GST.

As Kelowna continues to invest in public art and placemaking initiatives, projects like this one help showcase local talent while strengthening community connection through creativity.
