How to Partner With Other Local Businesses (Without It Feeling Awkward) | BoostBC

Partnering with other local businesses can be incredibly beneficial for everyone involved, but someone has to take the first step. Reaching out can feel a little awkward at first, even when you know it has the potential to help you grow within your community. The good news? It doesn’t have to be. Here are a few tips to help you move past the awkward stage and get straight to the fun part.

Start by identifying complementary businesses. Come up with a few local vendors who you are not in direct competition with, and who also compliment the products or services you offer. For example, a boutique and a jeweller would have a similar demographic. same for a yoga studio and a smoothie bar, or a wedding photographer and florist. You get the idea!

Build relationships. You do not need to jump off the deep end into a partnership. Get to know the other local businesses you identified by attending local networking events, visiting their shops, or even striking up a conversation on facebook or Instagram. Get to know them and see if you vibe with one another.

Make sure your pitch shows the value. This is the usually the uncomfortable part, however if your followed the first two steps, these people are no longer strangers. Pitch how a collaboration would benefit their business focusing on the shared customer demographic and local angle.

Start with something small. Test the partnership with a low-risk project before worrying about something grand. See how the benefits look for you both and grow together into a larger project. Figure out what works together as a team and as a community.

Following these steps can help build the confidence you need to reach out and connect with other local entrepreneurs, creating partnerships that strengthen credibility and visibility within the community. At the end of the day, a little awkwardness shouldn’t hold you back. The reality is, the worst they can say is no, but the best-case scenario could lead to meaningful collaborations, new audiences, and long-term growth. Putting yourself out there is the only way to open those doors, and you might be surprised by just how many are willing to walk through them with you.
