Local Spotlight: Central Okanagan Food Bank
Nourishing Kelowna & West Kelowna - feeding hope across the Central Okanagan
By BoostBC
When neighbours in Kelowna and West Kelowna need practical help, the Central Okanagan Food Bank (COFB) is there—meeting people with dignity, nutritious food, and programs that build stability. For over 40 years, COFB has been a cornerstone in the Central Okanagan, now providing essential food assistance to 12,000+ people every month.
COFB serves everyone—regardless of age, race, sex, marital status, ethnicity, language, disability, or health issues—and is the only organization in the region offering this level of nutritional support to households facing financial and food insecurity.
Why COFB’s work matters right now
Community needs in the Okanagan Valley have surged. In 2024, COFB saw a 43% increase in clients over the previous year, with many citing rising food costs as the primary reason they need support.
Who COFB serves each month (September 2025)

44% children
19% seniors on fixed incomes
35% two-parent working families
Behind these numbers are local stories—families, seniors, students, and workers doing their best to get by in a changing economy.
Programs that meet people where they are
Beyond emergency hampers, COFB runs targeted, high-impact programs across Kelowna and West Kelowna:
Tiny Bundles – Focused support for pregnant people and families with babies under 12 months, ensuring the newest Okanagan residents get a strong start.
Snack Pack Program – Healthy, ready-to-go snacks for children under 15, helping kids in our community stay energized and ready to learn.
Food for Thought – In partnership with School District 23, COFB provides essential meals in 42 schools, supporting 1,500 students every week.
Emergency Hampers – Rapid response for environmental and other declared emergencies that disrupt the food supply chain.
Food Rescue Program – Tackling food waste in the Central Okanagan by partnering with local retailers and farms to redirect high-quality surplus food to clients and community agencies.
More Than Food – Workshops, resources, and career-focused training that help clients build long-term stability. From budgeting and nutrition to cooking skills and employment readiness, this program helps break the cycle of food and financial insecurity.
A moment that says it all
One local family - new parents whose complicated birth wiped out a year of savings in six months - shared:
“The food bank has been a lifesaver. Unbelievably helpful during this time. It’s really helped us manage our situation.”
This is what “nourishing community and feeding hope” looks like in real life.
