Boaters Welcome Back as Cook Road Launch Reopens for Summer by BoostBC

As temperatures rise and boating season approaches, Kelowna residents and visitors can once again access the Cook Road boat launch, which is now officially open following the completion of annual spring dredging work.

Each year, sediment naturally builds up around the launch area, making dredging an essential part of maintaining safe and reliable access to Okanagan Lake. The recently completed work removed accumulated sand and sediment, ensuring the launch is fully operational and ready for public use ahead of the busy summer season.

The reopening comes as welcome news for local boaters eager to get back on the water. Whether heading out for a day of fishing, watersports, or simply enjoying the lake, visitors can now use the facility as normal. While the launch is open, the City is also continuing plans for a larger revitalization project at the site. The future improvements are expected to significantly enhance the overall experience for residents and visitors alike. Planned upgrades include replacing existing slips, constructing a new launch slip, building a public pier and groyne, and completing shoreline enhancements at nearby Truswell Park.

A groyne is a shoreline structure designed to help control the movement of sand and sediment, improving long-term shoreline stability and helping maintain access to the boat launch area.

Originally anticipated to begin sooner, the larger project has been delayed due to provincial permitting requirements and is now expected to start in the winter of 2026. Despite the delay, the City remains committed to improving the waterfront infrastructure and creating a safer, more accessible recreational space for the community.

In the meantime, visitors are encouraged to use the Cook Road boat launch responsibly and respectfully. Please follow all posted signage, be mindful of other users while launching and retrieving watercraft, and pay attention to site conditions and safety notices.

As summer activity increases on local waterways, cooperation and patience go a long way in helping everyone enjoy a safe and positive experience on the lake.

Before heading out, boaters are encouraged to plan ahead and familiarize themselves with launch information, regulations, and seasonal updates. More information about Kelowna boat launches can be found at kelowna.ca/boat-launches.
